What's a Wellness Coach Anyway?

Updated: Apr 4, 2019

So, you’ve decided you need to make some changes to improve your well-being but feel overwhelmed doing it on your own. Where do you turn for help?

You have a doctor and perhaps other practitioners as well, but you need someone who can take the time to listen to your concerns and to your personal wellness goals.

You want someone who won’t tell you what to do but will come alongside and support your efforts to reach those goals. You want someone who will take the time to really listen. If this describes you, you may find a wellness coach to be just what you need.

What to Expect

“So, what is a wellness coach anyway?” you ask. A wellness coach is, well, a coach primarily. Coaches serve as guides, cheerleaders, and overall great listeners. Listening is what a good coach does best. Coaches help you uncover and then build on your strengths. Coaches motivate you, encourage you, help you develop a lifestyle that supports your goals, and assist you in determining ways to overcome obstacles.

A wellness coach may also provide bonuses with her coaching program. Wellness coach programs will vary somewhat, but you may find that your coach includes things such as checklists or cheat sheets, videos, recipes, guides on topics of interest to you, templates, or group coaching calls.

Here’s what you can expect from me as a wellness coach. I’ll help you to get clearer on your goals and assist you in moving toward those goals one step at a time. I’ll do this in a way that leaves you feeling challenged, but not overwhelmed. Because the changes take place slowly, they’ll be more likely to provide lasting results.

Depending on what your goals are, we may discuss things like nutrition, exercise, stress management, relationship issues, weight loss, or sleep issues. We’ll also examine the habits and beliefs that are holding you back from achieving your goals.

What Won’t Happen

This approach is probably different than what you are used to. I won’t diagnose. I won’t prescribe medication. I won’t tell you what to do. I won’t promise quick fixes. I’ll be more interested in what you hope to achieve, and why it’s important to you. I’ll let you know if what you hope to achieve is outside the scope of my practice and will gladly refer you to someone else if needed.

At our first session, I'll gather as much information as possible and really get to know you. Our follow-up sessions will last approximately 45 minutes. You’ll be asked to let me know ahead of time what challenges you’re facing and what you hope to accomplish in each session.

This ensures productive sessions that lead you closer to your goals.

The Holistic Approach

When one part of your life is out of balance, it affects the other aspects of your life as well. As your wellness coach, my goal will be that you experience optimal well-being in all areas: mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual. I’ll do my best to empower you to succeed. Most importantly, I’ll listen.

Having a guide to create a clear path toward wellness may just give you the motivation and enthusiasm you need to see it through. Why go it alone?
